Botanical Name: Schinus molle
Plant Part: Berries
Origin: Peru
Processing Method: Steam Distilled
Product Description: Schinus molle is a quick-growing evergreen tree that grows up to 15 meters (50 feet) tall and wide. It is the largest of all Schinus species and potentially the longest-lived. The upper branches of the tree tend to droop. Although a peppercorn is the dried fruit of a plant from the genus Piper, pink peppercorns came to be called such because they resemble peppercorns, and because they, too, have a peppery flavour. Pink peppercorns are similar to black peppercorns in size, but their flavor is more delicate than that of black pepper, spicy, but without the heat. They are originally from South America, the Peruvian Andes, specifically. Which is why another name for pink peppercorns is Peruvian peppertree in addition to American pepper, escobilla, false pepper, molle del Peru, pepper tree, peppercorn tree, Californian pepper tree, pirul and Peruvian mastic.
